ABSTRACT

The authors describe an experimental search for Dirac monopoles made at the CEEN-PS with the 28 GeV internal proton beam striking a beryllium target. In Section1, the main expected properties for Dirac poles are summarized. A few theoretical points implied by their existence are briefly reviewed in Section2. The details of the experiment—referred to as type-III experiment—are given in Section3 (two other experiments have already been reported at theConference on Elementary Particles held at. Aix-en-Provence in 1961). In Section4 the derivation of upper limits for the production cross-section in protonproton and proton-nucleon collisions from the three experiments are discussed and summarized in Table III. In spite of the different significance of these experiments, global estimates of the upper limits for these crosssections (95% confidence limit) have been computed with the result: σ≤1.0·10-40 cm2 and σN≤0.5⋅10-40cm2.
