ABSTRACT

The negative-partiy bands built on the 7−/2(514) and 1−/2(521) orbitals have been excited in odd-A179W by means of the181Ta(p, 3nγ) reaction. From in-beam experiments with Ge(Li) spectrometers, several previously unreported high-spin levels in179W are found by measurements of singles, coincidences, angular distributions and excitation functions. The rotational parameters of the two bands are determined by least-squares fits to the observed energies, and satisfactory accord is obtained with the previsions of the strong coupling model in the approximation of weak perturbation. An unusually low upper limit of 0.035 is deduced for the quantity |gK−gR|, related to the magnetic properties of theK=7−/2 ground-state band. The analysis of the angular distributions indicates an appreciable degree of alignment for the angular momenta of the179W nuclei resulting from reactions induced by protons of energy higher than about 20 MeV.
