ABSTRACT

Cloud-chamber photographs of extensive cosmic ray showers are examined with reference to the question of lateral spread of shower particles. It is observed that investigations on average density and lateral distribution of shower particles are not actually independent, and the distribution of the numbers of the incoming tracks on the individual photographs is there by calculated. By comparison, of the calculated distribution with the experimental one, it is concluded that the experimental results may be accounted for by assuming that the dependence of the number of showers on the density Δ is expressed over a wide range by the lawf(Δ)dΔ=kΔ−γdΔ, previously proposed byCocconi, Loverdo andTongiorgi. The value γ=2,6 is deduced, in satisfactory agreement with the earlier determination of the above-mentioned authors. There is no evidence to show that condensations of particles may occur in extensive showers. More... »
