ABSTRACT

We investigate the scattering of three stable particles into three stable particles through the intermediary of an unstable particle or resonant state in both the initial and final states. The incoming unstable particle may be different from the outgoing unstable particle. Two cases are discussed: 1) The scattering interaction between unstable and stable particles is not singular. In the limit of vanishing widths the expression for the cross-section reduces to that describing the collision of two stable particles. 2) The interaction between unstable and stable particles is singular because of the exchange of a real particle (Peierls’ mechanism). In case 2), in the limit of vanishing widths, the cross-section is singular in the physical region. Further, in this case, the manner of preparation of the initial three-particle state is found to be significant in discussing the process. More... »
