ABSTRACT

A study of about 1000 short-range (⩽10 µm) hyperfragments produced by K− captures in emulsions is presented. The experimental data indicate that the production characteristics of (0÷3) µm hyper-fragements are different from those of (5÷10) µm; the hyperfragments of range (0÷3) µm seem to be predominantly heavy spallation products from Ag and Br, while the (5÷10) µm group are of lighter species (A<15) produced mainly from the light emulsion nuclei. These results are in good agreement with the calculated range and mass distributions obtained by a Monte Carlo procedure. It is further shown that the discrepancy between the calculated and observedF/B ratios of the black prongs with respect to the hyperfragment track can be explained by the effects of a contribution (Pcasc) to the hyperfragment momentum from the scatterings and interactions of particles created in the initial cascade stage. An estimate of the Λ0 binding energy in nuclear matter (DΛ≈(30÷32) MeV) is made from the mesonic decay of heavy spallation hyperfragments of range ⩽3 µm. More... »
