ABSTRACT

The number of maxima in the excitation function has been calculated (in the overlapping level region) as a function of the distance ε0 between two consecutive experimental points and of the fluctuation width Γ. The calculation has been made for the two limiting cases of one single channel and of many contributing channels. In contrast with some previous results the values of the proportionality factorbN come out to be the same in the two cases; its limit value for ε0/Γ→0 is found to be 1.10, in agreement with a recently reported value (1) and at variance with earlier results. Finally a criterion to avoid spurious maxima due to experimental errors is proposed and discussed quantitatively. More... »
