ABSTRACT

A model of the equilibrium surface composition of ternary alloys is presented. The model is intially developed on the basis of the regular solution approximation in which the usual nearest neighbor bond description is corrected for solute strain energy effects. Differences between the results of this model and those obtained from a previous model developed by Guttmann are discussed. The model is exercised over ranges of the parameters which correspond to substitutional metallic ternary solutions. Particular attention is paid to the changes in surface composition behavior of a binary alloy which result from the addition of a ternary component. More... »
