ABSTRACT

The response of a resonant antenna to monochromatic gravitational waves of the type that can be expected from fast pulsars is studied. It is shown that the band width of the detection system is not limited by the mechanical band width (vR/Q) of the bar but depends on the relative contributions of the Brownian noise and of the electronic amplifier noise; a band width of several Hz can thus be obtained. A resonant antenna at a temperatureT=0.1 K, massM=2300 kg, merit factorQ=107 measuring over a timet=1 month allows us to detect monochromatic gravitational waves withh∼10−26. More... »
