ABSTRACTThe microstructure observed on the rapid solidification of dilute alloys of Cu in Al has been examined. A high intensity heat source, namely, a 6 kW CO2 laser beam was passed over the surface of the alloy, and on regrowth a featureless zone is seen prior to a cellular morphology. Scanning transmission electron microscopy in conjunction with X-ray microanalysis was used to show that a concentration gradient exists across this region. The results support the theory that it is a plane front zone formed during the resolidification process. More... »
