ABSTRACT

Surgical PrinciplesThe en bloc intraarticular resection of the distal radius can be reconstructed using the ipsilateral whole proximal fibula as a non-vascularized autograft. A satisfactory articular congruency can usually be obtained. The ipsilateral fibula is used because its diaphysis and articular facet better adapt to the diaphysis of the residual radius and to the carpal joint surface. Such arthroplasty allows for a cosmetically normal, stable and painless wrist joint, with a range of motion from moderate to wide.Usually the functional result and the anatomy of the new joint remains unchanged at a long-term follow-up.
