ABSTRACT

Background: To minimize the extend of visible hypertrophic scars following reduction mammaplasty we use the B-technique since 1991 if the expected resection weight is about 700 g or less. This reduction mammaplasty is a technique with a short L-shaped lateral scar.Methods: To study the long term-results we examined 31 patients who underwent breast reduction with the B-technique between 1991 and 1995 at our department. We evaluated the widths of the scars, the extension of the areola, the sensibility of the areola and patients satisfaction.Results: The periareolar scar was extended in 6 patients, the vertical scar in 4 patients and the horizontal lateral scar in 2 cases. The diameter of the areola was 3.5 to 6 cm in all patients. Sensibility of the areola was decreased in 12 patients after the operation. We found high patient satisfaction rate of 94%.Conclusions: In cases with an expected resection weight less than 800 g the B-technique is superior to other techniques because the medial visible scar is avoided.
