ABSTRACTSince 1980, new national potato programmes have been operating in the central African countries of Burundi, Rwanda and Zaire. Seed of improved cultivars is multiplied and distributed to farmers by their respective Rural Development Projects. From the results of numerous onfarm trials in Rwanda, we can estimate the performance of the improved seed. Using these estimates and those for the quantity of seed distributed and estimates for the rate of the spread of the seed, we can simulate the impact of a programme's seed production on national production. Extrapolation from present results are based on a model using estimates of rates of degeneration and of distribution of the seed. The model forecasts the national yield improvement that may be expected when a national potato programme has been established in a country in central Africa and how programme strategy, and seed degeneration and multiplication rates influence increases in national potato production.
