ABSTRACT

Dihaploids ofSolanum tuberosum may have a regular form of calyx with relatively short sepals similar to that found in the diploid, wild species,S. sparsipilum, or an irregular form with relatively long sepals similar to that found in the cultivated, diploid species,S. stenotomum. The regular form is due to a dominant gene which may be strongly linked to theS genes controlling self-incompatibility. The results support the hypothesis thatS. tuberosum is a segmental allotetraploid produced by the doubling of chromosome number of a hybrid betweenS. stenotomum and a species with a regular calyx.
