ABSTRACT

Breeders' selections are routinely assessed for resistance to tuber blight at the Scottish Crop Research Institute by inoculating freshly dug tubers with a suspension ofPhytophthora infestans, and observing the percentage of blighted tubers after two weeks. The incidence of tuber blight in early cultivars (harvested at intervals between mid July and mid September) and in maincrop cultivars (harvested between early August and early October) decreased as the season progressed, with some cultivars gaining resistance more rapidly than others. The resistance of the tubers increased with time after lifting, the highest levels of infection occurring when the tubers were inoculated on the day of harvest. More... »
