ABSTRACTBreeders' selections are assessed for resistance to foliage blight (Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary) at the Scottish Crop Research Institute in both glasshouse and field tests. In attempts to improve the correlation between the two types of test a number of factors affecting the repeatability of the glasshouse test were examined. ‘Sturdy’ (well-spaced) plants were more resistant than ‘straggly’ (closely spaced) plants; plants inoculated 5, 6 or 7 weeks after planting were more resistant than those inoculated after 4 weeks; and plants grown during the spring were more resistant than those raised in the summer.
