ABSTRACTA preliminary survey of the therapeutic usefulness of Dulcolax,® a new laxative, leads to the following conclusions:The medication is effective. The medication is nontoxic in our experience.Laxation but not catharsis is induced.Nursing care is diminished in preoperative, preroentgenographic, and presigmoidoscopic preparation.Dulcolax® laxation for x-ray not only satisfactorily evacuates the colon but does not introduce air shadows.Dulcolax® preparation for sigmoidoscopy not only affords a cleansed rectum but does not appear to irritate the mucosa.Dulcolax® medication may be of considerable assistance to the patient with permanent colostomies—in some, irrigations may be obviated, in others, irrigation is facilitated.Another effective laxative has been added to the medications useful in the palliation of chronic constipation; its ultimate usefulness here requires further scrutiny.
