ABSTRACTIn 59 patients (94 eyes) who underwent penetrating keratoplasty, the aqueous-cornea transfer coefficient,kc ⋅ ac, and the distribution ratio between the aqueous and the cornea, rac, of fluorescein were determined by means of the oral fluorescein method. The thickness of the graft was also measured. In the early postoperative period,kc ⋅ ac was significantly increased and the graft was thick. During the next several months, both parameters became almost normal. A significantly positive correlation was found betweenkc ⋅ ac and graft thickness. On the other hand, no significant correlation was found betweenrac and postoperative period,kc ⋅ ac or graft thickness. It was concluded that the endothelial barrier function was damaged at the time of surgery and was gradually repaired postoperatively. More... »
