ABSTRACT

Since 1976, 73 peritoneo venous shunts (Le Veen) have been implanted in therapy-resistant ascites. Three-year survival was increased threefold. Endotoxin-containing ascites showed no biological activity. Increased fibrinolytic activity was noted in 37% of the patients studied. Postoperative fibrinogen loss showed good correlation with fibrinolytic activity of ascites (r=0.67, p 0.05). An increase in the fibrinolytic activity of ascites and a decrease in plasminogen activator clearance seem to be responsible for postoperative disturbances in blood coagulation. More... »
