ABSTRACT

Examination of 206 men suffering from ankylosing spondylitis showed a hyperuricaemia of more than 6.4 mg-% in 10% of the cases, while none of the 21 women examined with ankylosing spondylitis showed an hyperuricaemia of such an extent. In 12% of the patients the serum fatty acid esters were slightly increased and they showed an increment up to and above 500 mg-% in 7 patients (400 mg-% being normal). Comparative examination of two groups of patients with ankylosing spondylitis (one showing a normal and the other one with an excessively increased sedimentation rate higher than 50 mm p.W. during the first hour) demonstrated that patients without inflammatory reaction had significantly more hyperuricaemia and serum fat levels higher than those with excessively increased sedimentation rate. If the increased sedimentation rate is a parameter of inflammatory reaction, it may be concluded that the inflammatory reaction diminishes the concentration of uric acid and fat compounds in serum.
