ABSTRACT

In relation to corresponding investigations in the mammalian skin, this study determined for the first time the surface-pH of the avian integument in 36 bird species (wild and domesticated animals). The measurements were done on three different apteria, which showed relatively constantly weakly acid pH values between 4.93 and 6.03. Significantly higher values could only be obtained from poultry of intensive floor husbandry and battery husbandry. The results are discussed with regard to the specific microecological situation of the avian skin. In this connection, epidermal lipids may be of specific interest, with special regard to their decomposition products, such as free fatty acids, which probably are not only involved in the development of a weakly acidic surface milieu but also regulate the colonization of the epidermal surface by microorganisms.
