ABSTRACT

Electrophoretic behavior was studied of the polyphthalamide microcapsules containing aqueous solutions of various polyelectrolytes. The microcapsules containing anionic or cationic polyelectrolyte were found to move towards the anode or cathode according to the sign of charge on the polyelectrolyte. The mobilities decreased with increasing ionic strength of the medium when the encapsulated polyelectrolyte concentration was kept constant, while they initially increased and then levelled off as the polyelectrolyte concentration increased at constant ionic strength. If the microcapsules contained aqueous solution of amphionic polyelectrolyte, they migrated either to the anode or to the cathode depending on the pH of the medium, showing the existence of an isoelectric point.
