ABSTRACT

In the presence of minute quantities of water dissolved in toluene or heptane, catalyzed decomposition of CH3TiCl3 is observed which proceeds with homolytic rupture of the Ti-CH3 bond. Methane is formed largely by reaction of methyl radicals with CH3TiCl3.Heterolytic rupture of the Ti-Cl3 bonds in CH3TiCl3 proceeds preferentially in the water layer.H-D exchange takes place between water and toluene in the coordination sphere of CH3TiCl3 and the products of its decomposition in the presence of minute quantities of water.
