ABSTRACT

It has been established that the reaction of iron carbonyls with an activated silica matrix leads to the decomposition of the complexes and the predominant formation of iron(III) ions distributed in the interlayer space of silica (polyhedron I).The initial iron-containing complex having the polyhedron I structure is not active in synthesis from CO and H2; the increase in activity in the synthesis is associated with the formation of a reduced, labile complex of iron(II) incorporated in the matrix and of microcrystallites of nonstoichiometric magnetite on the silica surface.
