ABSTRACTThe effects of treatment with steam and of compression at 20,000 atm on the macrostructure and catalytic activity of alumina were investigated. It was shown that steam treatment resulted in reduction of the catalytic activity of alumina, great reductibn of its specific surface, almost complete disappearance of the micropores, and increase of the volume of intermediate pores. Steam treatment can be used as a method for the control of the porous character of oxide catalysts.Compression results in increase of the apparent density of alumina: the intermediate pores are destroyed, and this causes lowering of the specific catalytic activity of alumina at high temperatures; the reaction is then subject to diffusional retardation.
