ABSTRACT

ConclusionsThe possibility of changing the selectivity of the action of a nickel catalyst in the process of hydrogenation of crotonaldehyde was studied. The process proceeds nonselectively on a Ni-Al2O3 catalyst: the C = C and C = O groups are hydrogenated at almost the same rate. In contrast to this, on Ni-ZnO and Ni-Cd-ZnO (or Al2O3) catalysts, reduction of the C = O group lags sharply behind the degree of hydrogenation of the C = C bond: the degree of selectivity reaches 70–75%.The sharply differing behavior of these two types of catalysts agrees with the assumption that an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde is adsorbed on Ni-ZnO and Ni-Cd-ZnO (or Al2O3) catalysts with both the hydrogenatable groups simultaneously, and 1,4-addition of hydrogen occurs, proceeding more readily than reduction of the C = O group.
