ABSTRACT

The possible influence of natural humic water on the uptake of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, tetrachlorguaiacol, lindane and 2,4′,5-trichlorobiphenyl in Atlantic salmon underyearlings has been studied, using a semistatic test procedure. Springtime humus water reduced the bioconcentration factors for both the 2,4,6-trichlorophenol and lindane about 18 percent compared to lake water. No reduction in the bioconcentration factor was observed for tetrachloroguaiacol. Autumn humus water reduced the bioconcentration factor of 2,4′,5-trichlorobiphenyl 30 percent compared to lake water, while no reduction was observed for lindane. The results have shown that natural humus water can reduce the bioavailability of organic micropollutants towards fish.
