ABSTRACT

ConclusionsNew preparative methods are described for the preparation of phenols and quinolides by the oxidation of sterically hindered phenols by manganese triacetate or potassium dichromate.The mechanism of the oxidation and the yields of the end products vary when acidic media are used in place of neutral media. A stepwise two-electron mechanism is proposed for the oxidation, and the successive stages of the oxidation and the formation of byproducts are discussed. More... »
