ABSTRACT

X-ray irradiated pollen of maize of genotypeYg2I Sh Bz Wx has been used to fertilizeyg2C sh bz wx plants. The individuals grown from the heterozygous embryos obtained have been backcrossed on and by the multiple recessiveyg2C sh bz wx stock. Analysis of the different recombination classes leads to the following conclusions:the treatment was conducive to chromosomes which, although passing through meiosis, show lower transmission as compared with the untreated homologous conterpart, and which tend to undergo crossing-over at a decreased rate, especially in the regionBz-Wx.both in treated and untreated material double crossing-over in the regionI-Sh-Bz is higher than expected on the basis of the values of the two single crossover rates for the regionsI-Sh andSh-Bz (negative interference). A positive interference is, on the contrary, clear for the regionYg2-I-Sh, while the segmentSh-Bz-Wx shows no consistent interference. The results are briefly discussed. More... »
