ABSTRACTConclusionsThe consecutive twofold-degradation by the Smith method of the blood group substances (BGS) (A+H) was accomplished. The periodate oxidation of the BGS proceeds in sequence with the ends of the carbohydrate chains. The identification of threitol and 1,2,3-butanetriol in the products of the first degradation of the BGS was proved by the presence of galactose and fucose with 1–4 linkages in the carbohydrate chains. The data of the second degradation by the Smith method testify to a branching of the carbohydrate chains of the BGS, in which connection the center of the branching is galactose with a 1–4 linkage, bearing the branching in either the 2 or 3 position.
