ABSTRACT

ConclusionsThe addition of nickel to a mixture of copper and aluminum powders decreases the volume and linear growth of compacts in the temperature range 548–1000°C. Shrinkage increases and volume growth decreases with rise in the nickel content of the mixture.During the diffusion of nickel and copper, the predominant diffusion flux is from copper to nickel. This would be expected to lead to an inhibition of shrinkage during solid-phase sintering. In this connection, it is concluded that the increased shrinkage of a Cu-Al alloy resulting from the addition of nickel is associated with a widening of the temperature range in which the liquid phase can exist and with an increase in the amount of this phase in the compact.
