ABSTRACTThe isolated soma of snailHelix pomatia neurones was investigated under voltage clamp conditions. The subject of examination was the effect of changes in external Ca concentration on the calcium inward current. Thee-fold increase in external Ca (from 7 to 19 mM/l) shifted the inactivation curve for the inward current by 5±1 mV in the direction of depolarization. The conductance curve for the peak values of the inward current was shifted by 11±2 mV. Increase in Ca from 19 to 53 mM/l led to a further shift of the both curves by 8±1 mV and 12±2 mV respectively. The maximum membrane conductance for the calcium inward current increased with the increase in external Ca from 7 to 53 mM/l by 190±20%. The maximum of the inactivation curve for this current was at a holding potential of about −40 mV. A decrease of the inward current accompanying the shift of the holding potential to the hyperpolarization was found to be due to the activation of a fast outward current. More... »
