ABSTRACT

Summary1. Bradykinin and kallidin elicit a primary decrease in tone and a secondary increase in tone in the isolated duodenum, jejunum and ileum of the rabbit.2. The primary decrease in tone due to the kinins can be diminished or abolished by pretreatment with morphine, pethidine and methadone (probably by a neurotropic action); it can not be diminished or abolished by local anaesthetics, atropine, alpha- and beta-blockers, ganglionic blocking agents, guanethidine, phenylbutazone and coffein.3. In isolated preparations of the rat intestine the kinins elicit a decrease in tone which can not be antagonized by morphine, pethidine, methadone, local anaesthetics, atropine, alpha- and beta-blockers, guanethidine and phenylbutazone.4. The kinin-induced decrease in tone in isolated intestinal preparations of the rabbit and of the rat seems to be brought about by a different mechanism. More... »
