ABSTRACT

A modified Evans “flinch-jump” technique was used to estimate pain reaction in the rat. The analgesic effects of morphine sulfate, dl-methadone and d-propoxyphene were effectively but not completely antagonized by pre-treatment with p-chlorophenylalanine. p-Chlorophenylalanine antagonism of the analgesic effects of codeine sulfate was only suggestive and the analgesia produced by meperidine HCl appeared unaffected by it. It is hypothesized that the antagonism of the morphine analgesia is a result of a deficiency in serotonin concentrations produced by p-chlorophenylalanine. More... »
