ABSTRACT

After entry of Flac into exponentially-growing cells carrying R100, there was a long delay, of about 6 hr, before transfer inhibition was established. This long delay was not due to a correspondingly long delay in formation of the transfer inhibitor, since the presence of the latter could be demonstrated relatively early, when an Flac traJ- mutant was used. Transient synthesis of the traJ product, and the ability of this to allow synthesis of the transfer gene products required for DNA transfer, even in the presence of the transfer inhibitor, appears to account for the extended period of transfer. Transfer inhibition is established only after dilution out by growth firstly of the traJ product and then of the transfer products. More... »
