ABSTRACT

Strains with nonsense mutations of the supX locus in S. typhimurium have been isolated and characterized for suppression of promoter mutations as well as other pleiotropic effects. In addition other supX deletion mutations and probable point mutations were examined. All strains with supX mutations display the same properties: suppression of promoter mutations, antibiotic resistance, raised levels of alkaline phosphatase and high frequency of lysis by phage P22. Genetic suppression of the nonsense mutations simultaneously suppresses all these properties of the supX nonsense mutant strains (alkaline phosphatase levels were not tested). More... »
