ABSTRACT

Because of the well-known problem of variable cell differentiation encountered in the electron-microscopic evaluation of prostatic cancer, histochemical ultrastructural studies have been performed to assess whether an altered intracellular distribution of acid phosphatase is a more reliable index of malignant change. The results indicate that acid phosphatase activity not restricted to lysosomes is common in malignant cells, and that it may be an intermediate stage in the release of the enzyme into the serum.
