ABSTRACTThe phytotoxicity of Hg-ion, as measured by inhibition of turnip seed germination, is antagonized by Group Vla oxyanions. The effects of S04= and Se04= are limited to moderately toxic Hg concentration and selenite although a more potent antagonist is limited by its own toxicity. Sulfite, therefore, was a far superior Hg-antitoxicant: At 2.80 mM Hg allowed only 1 % germination, but the presence of 5.5 mM S04=, raised the response to 76%. The significance of these data was considered with respect to Hg-Se relations in animals, and occurrence of Hg, Se and S, and possible membrane interactions. More... »
