ABSTRACT

The temporal variations in fine root growth, mortality and decomposition were studied in a young and a mature (18 and 120 year in 1974, respectively) Scots pine Pinus sylvestris stand located on sandy sediments of glacifluvial origin at Ivantjärnsheden in Sweden. The structural composition of this specific ecosystem type is fairly simple with only a few dominating vascular species with distinctive morphological rooting features, e.g. Pinus sylvestris, Calluna vulgaris, and Vaccinium vitis-idaea. The root phytomass of these species was separated into one living (biomass) and one dead (necromass) fraction when excavating and sorting the root samples. Two methods were adopted in order to investigate the temporal variations in the fine-root death and renewal: (1) using data obtained by sequential core sampling; (2) measuring the ingrowth of new roots into root-free containers removed at regular times. The fine-root production of P. sylvestris, C. vulgaris and V. vitis-idaea using method (1) was estimated to 2.0, 0.6 and 1.5 times the average standing crop of the fine roots (FRB+FRN) in the young stand and 0.9, (0.6) and (0.1) times in the mature stand. The related estimates using method (2) were 1.5, 0.4 and 0.3 times the average standing crop in the young stand and 0.7, 0.5 and 0.0 times in the mature stand. The results from both methods indicate that fine root production and below-ground turnover exceed levels conventionally expected in forest ecosystems. In future ecosystem studies, there is a need for better estimates of the rates of change in the root systems, rather than solely structural descriptions of them.
