ABSTRACT

Attesting to Peter Gourvitch’s insights of “second image reversed,” Brexit is at the same time a product of domestic politics affecting regional politics and regional politics affecting domestic politics. The anger and frustration of the British voters that propelled them to deliver the exit verdict had many sources, among them is the elite-dominated European integration that the disenchanted public deems culpable of precipitating worsened wealth distribution and eliminating possibilities of social mobility. This chapter examines the role of the anti-establishment mood in the Brexit referendum. It analyses the perception of the public towards the so-called neoliberal establishment and its entangled relationship with the EU’s complicated technocratic system. More... »
