ABSTRACT

East Asia will remain of major importance to the UK in its ‘post-Brexit’ future. The UK government seems to assume that it will be able to pursue new bilateral trade deals with countries in the region. But it is not obvious that the countries concerned agree. The chapters in this book consider and evaluate the likely scenarios for ‘Brexit’ and how they might affect relations with the UK and EU in the future. Although the specific reactions vary, East Asian countries seem in agreement that their interests are better served by the UK remaining in the EU, not leaving it. For them, the EU has been a driving force of globalisation and they are sceptical that the UK alone can replace it in this respect. More... »
