ABSTRACT

Marrubium vulgare L. (Lamiaceae) is a medicinal plant used as stimulant and antispasmodic, and to treat diabetes, headache, bladder or uteral pain, among others. It is not a native Brazilian plant, but is well adapted especially in the plateau, being known as marroio or marroio-branco. Several experimental studies have confirmed its therapeutic potential as anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antidiabetic, among others. The main bioactive principles are labdane diterpenes and flavonoids. Marrubiin, the major component, is produced from premarrubiin in conditions that use heating. Farther clinical studies are necessary to confirm the results evidenced in preclinical experiments.
