ABSTRACT

In view of the size of population, scarcity of resources, existing poverty, insufficient health facilities, and absence of a social security system, ageing is going to be a major problem in Bangladesh. Probability proportional to size sampling technique was used to collect data from 896 elderly (60 + years) persons from Rajshahi district during April 2009. Compared to urban elderly, more rural elderly are illiterate, unhealthy, and have been suffering from multiple diseases such as arthritis, gastric, eye problems, and hearing problem. The urban aged have more income, better sanitation and household facilities, live with married sons/daughters, and lead better lifestyles. More rural aged reported suffering neglect because of their depleted financial resources. Respondent’s marital status, work status, and facing abusive behavior for living arrangements; having physical exercise during last 6 months for health status; and living arrangements and family’s monthly income for elderly abuse are found as more influential factors. This research could greatly assist policy makers and planners to develop suitable programs addressing the needs and welfare of the elderly, particularly living arrangements, health, and abuse, not only in Rajshahi district but also in Bangladesh in general.
This research could greatly assist policy makers and planners to develop suitable programs addressing the needs and welfare of the elderly, particularly living arrangements, health, and abuse, not only in Rajshahi district but also in Bangladesh in general.",

26 schema:description In view of the size of population, scarcity of resources, existing poverty, insufficient health facilities, and absence of a social security system, ageing is going to be a major problem in Bangladesh.
