ABSTRACT

It is generally accepted that phosphorylation/dephosphorylation of light harvesting chlorophyll a,b-protein complex controls the distribution of light energy between the two photosysterns. The activation of the membrane bound kinase involved in this process is mediated by the redox state of the plastoquinone pool (Haworth et al., 1982). Recently the presence of a chlorophyll a,b-protein complex was demonstrated in the procaryote Prochloron (Withers et al., 1978a) which lives in association with ascidians up to 30 meters below the sea surface where blue light, primarily absorbed by photosystem II, predominates. In this case, one might expect a different mechanism of regulation of the kinase activity, as compared with that found in organisms exposed to both blue and red light. In the present work we report the presence of a membrane bound kinase in Prochloron, which phsophorylates the chlorophyll a,b-protein complex in vitro and does not require activation by light.
