ABSTRACT

The chloroplast genome of most higher plants studied so far is a circular DNA molecule of about 140–150 Kbp which codes for a number of polypeptides found in the chloroplast and also for chloroplast-specific ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs) and transfer RNAs (tRNAs) which are different from their cytoplasmic counterparts (for a review see: Weil, Parthier 1982). In maize and tobacco this circular molecule is organized, as in most higher plants studied so far (for a review see Bohnert et al. 1982), into four regions, i.e. two copies of an inverted repeat region separated by a large and a small single copy region (Bedbrook et al. 1978; Seyer et al. 1981). Each of the inverted repeat regions carry the 16S, 23S, and 5S rRNA genes with a spacer region located between the 16S and the 23S rRNA genes. More... »
