ABSTRACT

African cassava mosaic disease (ACMD) is caused by African cassava mosaic virus (ACMV), a whitefly-transmitted geminivirus with bipartite genome denoted DNA-A and -B. It has been rated one of the most important diseases of cassava in Africa. Due to high heterozygosity and the low fertility of many local varieties, it is difficult to produce ACMV resistant varieties by traditional breeding such as the inter- and intra-specific crosses. Biotechnology provides an alternative approach to complementing the efforts in traditional breeding. Current progress in cassava genetic transformation makes it possible to produce ACMV-resistant cassava from different virus resistance approaches. More... »
