ABSTRACT

Stable icosahedral(i-) and decagonal(D-) quasicrystals form in Al-(Cu,Ni,Pd)-transition metal(TM) ternary and quarternary alloys. Formation of the stable quasi-crystals is closely related to the group of the TM elements in the periodic table. It stresses that the stability of quasicrystal is mainly dominated by the electronic structure. An empirical rule of the formation for the stable iquasicrystal is derived, that is, the composition of a single stable i-phase lies in the valence concentration (e/a) near 1.75. The universality of the empirical rule is evidenced by the discovery of new stable i-phase. A very strong composition dependence of phason strains and chemical order is seen in rapidly quenched i-Al-Pd-Mn alloys. No difference in linewidths and dependence of linewidths on phason momentum was observed in both as-quenched and annealed states in a stable i-A170Pd20Mn10 alloy, indicating chemical composition plays an important role in the phason strains in a quasi-lattice. A part of phase diagram including i-phase in Al-Pd-Mn system is determined. The i-phase forms peritectically in a temperature range of ˜20 K which is much narrower than the other stable i-phase.
