ABSTRACT

Transport and specific heat measurements will be discussed on selected icosahedral crystals and their related structural phases to examine the effects of randomness, icosahedral symmetry, and atomic potential on electronic properties. We report the observation of Fermi-surface and Jones-zone boundary interactions and stress their importance in the stability of icosahedral phases. Unusual electronic structure and conductivity behavior in highly ordered icosahedral crystals will be discussed. The effects of structural order on electronic properties and the propensity toward a metal-insulator transition in the AlMnSi, AlCuFe, and AlCuRu systems are ascribed to band-structure effects.
