ABSTRACT

The main ideas of this extended abstract are submitted for publication in Physica D in a paper entitled “spiral windows for escaping stars”. Some further results (see figure 6) have been added. With the help of a normalized approximation of the vicinity of an unstable periodic orbit, we explain the spiral structures found previously by numerical simulation. Those spiral structures are constructed by embedding an infinity of spirals inside each other, which leads to the fractality shown in figure 6. This behaviour is generic and is likely to exist in a large class of chaotic scattering problems. More... »
