ABSTRACT

Wild plants are highly adapted to the conditions in which they grow. An important component of adaptation is the timing of flowering, which occurs when conditions are most likely to maximize pollination, seed development, seed dispersal and subsequent germination. The importance of reproductive success has resulted in the evolution of sophisticated mechanisms to ensure that the timing of flowering is correct. These mechanisms utilize a range of environmental cues including light quality, day length, temperature and the availability of water and nutrients as well as endogenous signals related to the size and age of the plant. The relative importance of the different components of control varies greatly between species and even between ecotypes. More... »
