ABSTRACT

Damnacanthal, an anthraquinone isolated from the root of Morinda elliptica was assayed for cytotoxicity against the CEM-SS (T-lymphoblastic leukemia) cells. We found that damnacanthal at the IC50 concentration (4 µg/ml) caused Go/G1 growth arrest as detected by flow cytometric analyses without any effects on apoptosis. However, at higher concentration (30 µg/ml), damnacanthal induced apoptosis in CEM-SS cells as detected both by morphological analysis and internucleosomal DNA cleavage. Further characterisation of apoptosis revealed that Zn and cycloheximide inhibited DNA cleavage in damnacanthal treated cells. More... »
